09/29/07 -- Kansas City, MO
My teenage son, his friend and I stayed one night in the Sportsman
Suite on September 22 and they loved it! It was a great getaway for
making family memories and it was worth it. They really liked the
DVD player and big screen TV in the suites and I liked the big
pillows to put over my head as they watched movies that we brought
with us. They were amazed at the trains that flew by as we sat by
the gazebo down the trail and it was really interesting to listen to
the radio of the trains as they got ready to come through Laplata.
The boys did enjoy the indoor pool, although they got a little rowdy
and the very nice gal working at the desk got onto them, which was
supported by me. The hotel is only 12 miles from the square in
Kirksville and I will not stay anywhere else but there when I come
to visit family. The staff is very nice and helpful and I got to
visit again with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Marshall, very gracious and
humble folks. I want to give a special Thanks to the cleaning staff
as the place is immaculate. That is very impressive! Again, Thanks
for a great visit and we'll be back!

The Depot Inn and Suites is by far the most wonderful place I have
stayed. The handcrafted wood work, the quaint train theme, the history
and the natural beauty all combine to make the most elegant and relaxing
environment. This small establishment has big things on the horizon! I
traveled with my daughter (3), my sister, and my nephew (8 months). This
establishment was the family friendliest place I have ever been. They
had a playground, bikes, games, basketball hoop, pool table, and an
amazing indoor pool that is best seen rather than described. We stayed
in a standard room which would be a luxury suite at any other
establishment and the staff generously let us sneek at peek at the
themed rooms which are the most breath taking rooms I have ever
encountered. I called my husband on the spot and informed him that he
would need to be making our anniversary arrangments at the Depot Inn and
to request the Victorian Suite. To cap off our wonderful stay, we were
given a complimentary ride on a mini train around the propery. The
conductor gave the kids each a train whhistle and they had the best
time. I have told every person I have encountered about my trip and I am
in the process of planning a great girls getaway weekend with some of my
friends. This property truly has something for everyone!
09/09/07 -- Kansas City, MO
My teenager daughter, her friend and I, stayed on Sat. night of
(9-1-07} and we loved it! They especially loved the DVD player in the
room and walking down the gravel road to see all the trains come flying
by! The hotel is very clean and everyone is very nice and helpful. We
stayed in the Western Suite. The hotel is only 12 miles from the square
in Kirksville. I talked to Mr. Harold Marshall (the owners son) and he
told me of the planned expansion and it sounds incredible. I have
reservations again for later in the month with my teenage son and friend
so will see how that goes!
09/02/07 -- Huntington Beach, CA
Mother and I just returned from La Plata, Missouri on September 1, 2007.
The staff was friendly and very helpful. They will go out of the way to
make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. The Depot Inn and Suites is
northeast Missouri’s finest themed lodging and a wonderful place to take
in the railroad ambiance.
In addition to the railroad-themed hotel there is a special area just
for train watching which includes a wooden structure that houses a radio
scanner so that railfans may hear the transmissions from dispatchers and
train personnel. This lookout overseas the BNSF line below in which many
freight trains and Amtrak travel on daily. It is called the “Chris
Guenzler Millionth Mile Lookout Point” located across the way from the
old Wabash line. (There are plans to re-build the Wabash Railroad and
its depot just for the new resort). In the near future a new two-story
building will be built that will allow people to enjoy the view in all
types of weather and never worry about the outside elements.
We saw plans for a Rail Resort (expected to be completed in the near
future). The resort will have its own train running on a track around
the property and there will be unique stores, restaurants, and much,
much more!
The hotel is close to the Amtrak train depot and by a major highway
where thousands of vehicles and tourist buses drive. In the near future
there will be an Amtrak Historical Society Exhibit.
Mother and I give the Depot Inn & Suites a Five-Star Gold Spike rating!
08/07/07 -- Peoria, IL
My wife and I were in Kirksville for business. I had made reservations
at the Days Inn in there. We checked in and went to our room. What a
dump! Neither one of us said a word. We were lost for words. I
immediately went to the phone and grabbed the yellow pages. I called the
Holiday Inn and they were booked as were a couple of other hotels in
Kirksville. The young man at HIE advised calling The Depot Inn & Suites
in LaPlata. Luckily they had a vacancy. They were able to turn a
disaster into one of the best hotel stays I have ever had. Very clean
with a personal and warm staff. It was more like a hybred of a hotel and
a bed and breakfast. We plan on returning to this place.
08/06/07 -- Kansas City. MO
This was our 2nd stay at the Depot Inn. We were just as impressed as we
were the first time. The rooms are beautifully decorated and very clean,
and the staff is warm and friendly. It is very well-run. Everyone we saw
seemed to be having a good time, from the kids playing in the pool to
the guests playing cards in the lobby to the folks outside taking a
train ride! Tom and Kelly could teach a lot of "big city" hotels a thing
or two!
07/26/07 -- Grand Rapids, MI
My wife and I had heard about Depot Inn & Suites via the Internet and
decided to take a mini-rail vacation, staying at the Depot Inn & Suites
for a couple of days to soak up the rail atmosphere at the Inn and at
the nearby BNSF mainline.
While my wife and I are both rail enthusiasts, we feel that a post such
as "Warning. Depot Inn & Suites may be habit forming" might be
necessary. As hard as we tried to find an unfriendly staff member, we
couldn't. Everyone on staff was very friendly and accomidating.
Cleanliness was at its best, with the exception of a small pebble by the
main entry.
One of the highlights for us was the overlook on the old Wabash Railroad
right-of-way. They have constructed a covered structure where you can
sit and watch the trains roll by on the BNSF mainline. They have
thoughtfully included a scanner at the overlook so you can hear the
transmissions of the trains and dispatcher.
We saw the plans that the Depot Inn & Suites have for the future and
will certainly keep our eyes open for the progress. Staying there was
great this trip. The plans they have for the future will make it a
fantastic place to stay. Yes, it does help if you like trains but if you
don't care that much for trains, there are several historical locations
within an hours drive of La Plata to see. We'll do that on our next
visit.
Be warned though, you may go there not caring much about railroads, but
you may leave with a different view. All in all, we had a wonderful time
while there. If there was anything negative to say about Depot Inn &
Suites it would be that it wasn't closer to the BNSF mainline.
We give Depot Inn & Suites a Five Spike rating!
07/19/07 -- Orange County, CA
This is about my 5th or 6th stay since the Depot Inn & Suites opened.
This time, my wife and I stayed here and with friends that live locally,
visited nearby Marceline, the boyhood town of Walt Disney. Walt Disney
created Main Street USA in both Disneyland and Disney World using the
main street of Marceline as he remembered it. We also visited the Walt
Disney Hometown Museum that is in the Santa Fe Depot which was also an
Amtrak Station until Amtrak ceased stopping here a few years ago. The
Depot Inn is pretty central to a number of America's historic locations
so my wife and I plan to return here in the future as we have a chance
to visit each of these historic sites. We just love the overall quality
and ambiance of the inn.
07/17/07 -- Pleasanton, CA
I have stayed at the Depot Inn and Suites twice. The first time was in
December of 2006 for the 10th anniversary of a local business that had
relocated to La Plata (TrainWeb). My second stay was in April of 2007
for an event where a man had accomplished one million miles by rail, and
held the celebration at the Depot Inn.
I love this place so much, as well as the staff, the town, and the
surrounding area, that I have considered moving there. Everyone is so
friendly, and it's hard to get used to strangers waving and saying
hello. That sure doesn't happen where I live.
The hotel itself is clean and new. It's like staying in a railroad
museum, with all of the items on display and placed throughout the
hotel. My one and only gripe is pretty minor, but I'll mention it
anyway. On both of my stays at the hotel, the toilets were not wiped
down and had "splatter" from previous guests all over the rim. I thought
it might have been a fluke the first time I stayed there, but when it
was there the second time a few months later, I'm thinking this might be
a minor issue with the housekeeping staff.
Other than that minor issue, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there. The
owner's father, Harold, is a real treat to be around. One of the nicest
men you'll ever meet. His talents are on display all over the
property---what can he NOT build? He is amazing.
I liked having the free golf carts available for guests to transport
them over to the train watching platform. And the free shuttle service
to/from the Amtrak depot is fantastic! I will be visiting here again in
the near future---I miss it already!
One note about renting from Enterprise rent-a-car at this location: the
rental office is located a good distance away, in the town of
Kirksville. If you are arriving or departing on a weekend when the
Enterprise office is closed, you could have some problems. Both times I
rented an Enterprise car and wanted to return it to the front desk of
the Depot Inn (which is no problem). However, Enterprise will charge you
for the full weekend until they pick it up on Monday morning, even
though the car is just sitting there not being used and you departed
long ago. I would think something can be arranged to prevent these extra
charges.
07/10/07 -- Dallas, TX
We stayed at this hotel while we were attending a Family Reunion in
nearby Kirksville, Missouri.
Growing up, I had frequent visits to LaPlata, as it was the home of my
grandparents. Although I'd not been back in 30 years, I wanted to stay
in LaPlata for this trip.
What a wonderful, wonderful surprise the Depot Inn turned out to be! Not
only was it clean (as in spotless!), comfortable (as in wonderfully
fresh and soft bedding and a rocking recliner in your room!), and nice
people (as in the girl at the front desk gave me one of her own ponytail
holders when I needed one to go in the pool!) ---- but it is a Train
Enthusiast's dream come true!
The train decor is plentiful and authentic. The 'hobo' signs on the room
doors are an added touch and the outlook area they've built over the
train tracks (that you can drive one of their golf carts to) is so nice!
It's furnished with comfortable patio furniture and wired to hear the
train communications. We sat at the outlook area, sipping coffee and
visting, and within 45 minutes enjoyed the passing of 4 trains -
listening to the whistles, feeling the rumble and getting some great
train photos.
Although the reason we went on this trip was because of our Family
Reunion --- the hotel itself would have been a wonderful travel
destination on it's own merit.
We highly recommend this hotel. We also recommend dining at the nearby
Red Rooster Restaurant where we enjoyed 3 wonderful meals.
07/06/07 -- Kansas City, MO
I make frequent trips to the area to visit relatives and always stay at
the Depot Inn and Suites. The staff is considerate and helpful and the
accommodations are very comfortable. When my children and grandchildren
visit, they have great fun at the pool, riding the little train, riding
bikes, playing on the playground and going to the overlook to see trains
going by.
06/25/07 -- Iowa
The rooms are comfortable, decorated well, and quiet. We loved the pool
(almost as much as the kids), and if it would have been nicer weather,
we would have taken advantage of the outdoor grilling area, the toys and
bikes, etc. What a great idea - it's a destination in the middle of
rural Missouri. Very friendly staff, too.
06/20/07 -- Sedalia, MO
My family and I just drove up to getaway. We saw the ad in Trains
magazine. Couldn't ask for anything better. The railfanning in this area
is excellent the hotel is great. Just go!!! You won't be disappointed.
06/12/07 -- Nashville, TN
I saw the Depot Inn advertisement in Trains magazine and knew it was a
place I wanted to check out. In fact I drove from Nashville, TN, to La
Plata, MO, just to visit La Plata and stay at the Depot Inn and visit
the Overlook Pavilion near the Inn on the BNSF Mainline to watch the 70
or so trains pass each day. The hotel as others have said is simply like
staying with friends and family. I stayed in the Pullman suite and it
was very nice and accommodating. After checking in I found the overlook
which is less than a half mile from the Inn. Since I was there mid week,
I had the overlook to myself except for the evening when other Inn
guests came down. I would stay for about 3 hours at a time and really
enjoyed relaxing and watching the trains. The weather was wonderful and
about 74 degrees first day and up to about 84 the next day. The owner,
Tom Marshall, came down to the overlook the first evening and introduced
himself and gave me a Depot Inn cap and La Plata pin. He told me some of
his plans for the future to build up the area from the Inn to the
railroad tracks with a Railroad Resort with museums, water parks, narrow
gauge railroad to use as a shuttle between a new Amtrak station,
restarants, the Inn, and other resort features. I also met Tom's dad,
Harold, who is sort of the tour host for the Inn and drives a rubber
tired small train around the Inn to and from the nearby Red Rooster
Restaurant. I ate dinner here one meal and it is very good. I will
definitely be back to visit and follow up on the development of the area
around the Inn.
06/04/07 -- Glendale Heights, IL
"Wanna get away" for a restful, peaceful , but exciting time ? Then come
to the Depot Inn & Suites in LaPlata ! That's just what my wife and I
did recently and WOW, what a pleasant surprise! Like Disneyland, there's
no other place like it on Earth!! Beautifully decorated throughout with
railroad themes, artifacts, etc., it has a friendly family atmosphere
and truly feels like a home away from home. The dedicated and caring
staff pull out all stops to make sure of that. The rooms are spacious
and extremely comfortable. Just check out their website
www.depot-inn.com and see for yourself. And if you happen to be arriving
via Amtrak's Southwest Chief, no need for a taxi as someone will be
there to pick you up. Usually it is Mr. Harold Marshall. Harold is a
very charming gentleman and has a unique gift for greeting you , by
name, as you detrain, even though he has never met you before ! There
were at least 40 people on the arrival platform, yet he knew we were the
Pollack's from Chicago. There was another couple nearby and he called
them by their name as well. How does he do that?? There's also plenty to
see and do in the area for both young and old (and the in-betweens too)
. Just check with Tom, Kelly or Harold for recommendations. They will be
more than happy to oblige and point you in the right direction. Escorted
tours will also be available in the very near future. Kudos to Tom,
Kelly , Harold and staff for a fantastic experience and making us feel
so welcome! We look very much forward to visiting again ! John & Doris
Pollack, Glendale Heights, IL.
05/14/07 -- St. Louis, MO
A cozy, homelike atmosphere, friendly service, and nicely appointed
rooms ... I can't think of anything bad to say, except that it's hard to
get a reservation because it's a small motel and word has gotten out on
what a nice place it is.
05/05/07 -- Southeast, IA
Everyone should stay here at least once. A great inn in a little country
town. The decor was just fabulous and the room rates extremely
reasonable - even for the themed rooms. There is even a great little
resturaunt practically next door. I will be staying again for sure, even
though I only live a little over 1 hour away!! And I am recommending it
to everyone I know (and even some I don't know).
05/04/07 -- Huntley, IL
The Depot Inn & Suites is an incredibly nice hotel. Owners Tom and Kelly
Marshall and Manager Maria Snodgrass offer great hospitality and a very
friendly and charming environment at a very reasonable price. This is a
train themed hotel, but is not just for train enthusiast. There are
plenty of conveniences for the business traveler including free wireless
internet and a large work area in each room. For the traveling family
there is plenty to do at the hotel. There is a large indoor swimming
pool, bikes to ride and a play ground for the kids.
For those that are into trains, there couldn’t be a much better place to
stay. The lobby and halls are lined with very interesting train
artifacts and memorabilia. The Depot Inn has built an observation deck
along a bluff above the tracks for viewing the number of passing freight
and passenger trains. The observation deck is with in easy walking
distance to the hotel, but if you prefer, the hotel will furnish you
with a golf cart to take you to the bluff.
The hotel has a continental breakfast available in the lobby, but if you
want a little more breakfast, the Red Rooster restaurant is just a few
steps away. The Red Rooster is also open for lunch and dinner.
For your transportation needs, the Depot Inn will make arrangements with
Enterprise Rent a Car to have your car brought to the hotel and when you
are done with the car, just leave it the Depot Inn and Enterprise will
pick it up. If you are arriving in LaPlata by train as I did, the Depot
Inn will pick you up at the Amtrak station and bring you to the hotel.
Tom and Kelly have grand plans for a full train themed resort including
an indoor water park, narrow gauge rail road and an I-Max theater. It
will be fun and exciting to see their dream come true.
I would highly recommend the Depot Inn and Suites as either a stop over
hotel or as a destination location for both families and business
travelers.
04/10/07 -- Arizona
On a recent trip to the Northeast Missouri area, my family and I had the
distinct pleasure of staying at one of the nicest Hotels we have ever
come across.
Awhile back one of our relatives who lives in the area, sent us a
brochure about a place that had recently opened called The Depot Inn &
Suites. I remember looking at the brochure at the time and thinking the
place looked very nice and possibly a fun place to stay while on our
next planned visit. Once there, The Depot Inn & Suites turned out to be
much nicer then we had anticipated. The night we arrived we had the
privilege of meeting and talking with owners Tom & Kelly Marshall, which
left us feeling that we were not just another patron at their Inn, but
rather special guests in their own home.
This establishment is truly worthy of the highest recommendation.
I can honestly say that I have never stayed somewhere I enjoyed more.
03/27/07 -- Troy, MO
Stayed at the Depot Inn and Suites in LaPlata, MO. Only 12 miles South
of Kirksville. A great place to stay----comfortable rooms. The swimming
pool is a real treat--the water is warm and it's a great lap pool. I
look forward to my next trip to that area; This is my hotel of choice.
03/21/07 -- Los Angeles, CA
I stay at some of the finest hotels all over the world, so I believe
that I know a good overnight experience when I have one. But I can tell
you that I have never spent the time or effort to write a review. In
order for me to do this, the experience must exceed my expectations by
so much that I am almost speechless. The Depot Inn and Suites in La
Plata, Missouri is that kind of place. By recommendation from a friend,
I had the pleaseure of staying at this fantastic hotel and I want you to
know why you should stop there as well.
First off, the owners, Kelly & Tom were so friendly and helpful that it
trickled down to every member of their staff. I really felt like they
were my extended family from the beginning.
Then came the room. I stayed in the Pullman Suite and it was by far one
of the best overnight accomodations I can remember in a long time. The
bed was huge and extremely comfortable. A jacuzzi tub and large flat
panel television made me want to stay there forever. An electric
fireplace gave the room a great ambiance and automatically shut off
during the night as I slept.
As for the business I was attending to that week, the entire hotel had
wireless internet with a very strong signal. There was no additional
charge for this service and I was able to accomplish what I needed to
with no hassle. This left time for the best part.
Trains, trains, trains - everywhere. I have to admit, I knew very little
about the history of the area or the importance of trains in general,
but I do now. The entire Inn is a beautiful, but low key cultural
experience about the hsitory of La Plata's importance to the convergence
of the Santa Fe and Wabash rail lines. Local artifacts, original
paintings, scale models and full size equipment can be explored
throughout the Inn and the surrounding property.
The week I arrived, the Inn had just built a cool observation deck that
overlooked the tracks so you could watch trains. Its a must see for any
rail fan and also very interesting to a casual observer like me who
wants to learn more.
Throughout my stay, many local people, friends and relatives of Kelly
and Tom, stopped by - like they probably do everyday. The Inn was truly
a gathering place for everyone that lives by. I truly felt that over the
the two nights that I stayed at the Depot Inn & Suites that I met some
wonderful and unexpected new friends and I can't wait to return soon
with my own family to further this experience.
03/18/07 -- LaPlata, MO
Unbelievable, luxurious, reasonably priced, really enjoyed the railroad
theme. I would recommend this fine hotel to anybody traveling through
north missouri, ammenities were over the top. I've stayed at hotels
throughout the u.s that were priced well over a thousand dollars a
night, and they fell considerably short. Be prepared to be impressed.
02/13/07 -- Fairfield, IA
What a great property in a small town! The Marshall's really put their
hearts into this project and it shows. Even those who are not railroad
buffs will enjoy the quality to detail and workmanship here. Tom
Marshall is a cabinet maker and tells us that he served as the general
contractor and completed the project in only five months with mostly
local help. Be sure to try the pool and wait for the surprise when the
train whistle goes off. And of course the bed , ahh that wonderful
bed.......
12/12/06 -- Placentia, CA
I kept pausing as I walked to the Sportsman Suite, to look at all the
Railroad historical photographs and memorabilia. The Suite reminded me
of the new Del Webb home our friends have in a Sun City, with it's
modern upscale decorations, colors, crown molding (even in the
bathroom!), carpet, luxury towels and robes, jacuzzi tub, fireplace, and
since this was in December, even a decorated Christmas Tree! You've
never seen a four-poster bed like this (see their website)! There's a
refrigerator and microwave. There's a light breakfast in the lobby (with
ample tables for guests).
Since I was part of a convention held here and off site, the meeting
room was setup for socializing, with locally catered food, and a DVD
projector where we watched many railroad videos as we chatted.
Being a digital outdoor photographer, I enjoyed the fast, FREE wireless
AND ethernet Internet connections around the property. I used one
computer to upload photographs and check my e-mail and the second laptop
for my travel writing and Internet desk research.
I was welcomed at the train station, having arrived on the Amtrak
Southwest Chief from California, by one of the Marshall family that owns
the Depot Inn, and taken back to the station for my departing train. You
can rent an Enterprise car right at the hotel!
We learned from the Marshall's about some local sites and drove into the
countryside to take photographs. Beautiful homes in town caught our
photographic eye as well. The public auction downtown was great fun, and
seeing the Amish buggys on the roads reminded me of a simpler life.
Treat yourself and stay at the Depot Inn & Suites whether you are a
photographer, rail fan, history buff, or just like the beauty of the
country! Ask the Marshall's about the future Rail Resort! (There's a
drawing in the lobby).
10/29/06 -- St. Louis, MO
This is the perect place to stay with kids or without. The pool was
great and the decor was really facinating. I enjoyed walking around and
looking at the Hobo signs on each door, and playing pool in the lobby.
The staff were so friendly and helpful. I look forward to going back
again and again.
10/08/06 -- Decatur, IL
My wife and I were returning from a trip to Truman State and go through
LaPlata, MO. on the way home. After having trouble booking rooms in
Kirksville on previous trips and not having a great experience at their
local hotels, we noticed the Depot Inn which was still under
construction was opening soon, so we gave it a shot and made our
reservations. Nothing can ruin a trip faster that a bad hotel
experience. Upon arrival, the first thing that came to mind was
"Flawless". Beautiful landscaping, spotless inside and out, a museum
like atmosphere throughout.
Beautiful spacious rooms, this was truly a rare find. Tom Marshall and
his staff were the friendliest I've come across in years and on future
trips will not give any other hotel a second thought, can't say enough
good things about this place, you have to experience this jewel for
yourself.
10/18/06 -- Keizer, OR
The Depot Inn is a fantastic little inn in the middle America's
Heartland. When I walked in the front door I felt like I was entering an
English countryside hotel (Cotswolds or Lake District). The lobby is
absolutely charming and beautifully decorated and welcoming. There are
so many details . . . nothing has been overlooked in creating its
ambience. If you are a train afficiado this is a MUST stop or actually a
destination. The pool is gorgeous. The rooms have wonderful amenities.
Staff are there to please. Children are very welcome. The General Store
is delightful. The Depot Inn is a community affair . . . a wonderful
tribute to small town America. If you travel by train, do stop and spend
the night. If you are visiting Truman State University in Kirksville,
stay at The Depot Inn in LaPlata, a short drive away. Need a weekend
away from home and you live in MO, IA, or KS, go the The Depot Inn. Well
worth the visit! Enjoy!
10/18/06 -- DesMoines, IA
The Depot Inn and Suites is incredible! I've stayed at so-called luxury
hotels that didn't come close to the luxury of this place! Affordable
rates, great place for kids (lots of stuff for them to do: pool,
playground, "mini train" rides) classy staff and incredible decor! If
you are a train fan, you'll be exceedingly delighted by the train
antiques and memorabilia! The scale on this site doesn't allow me to
rate it high enough! I'd vote for "above and beyond excellent!"
09/29/06 -- Cedar Rapids, IA
The Depot Inn and Suites is a truly remarkable property. We happened on
it by chance because I wanted to make a trip to the Macon area and so
thought I'd search for railroad stuff that would make the trip more
attractive to my railfan husband. The whole place is just gorgeous --
super comfortable and with an attention to detail that you seldom find
in a small hotel, let alone a small hotel in a tiny town in Missouri! An
example: crown moulding is carefully mitered to bracket smoke detectors
and other unavoidable eyesores in decorative glory. Or the two gas
grills available on the outdoor patio, near the children's play yard
featuring (of course!) a wooden locomotive model on which to climb. The
lobby ceiling must be 20 feet high, and there's a pool table alongside a
really gorgeous leather seating area.
There is no restaurant on the property, but the Red Rooster restaurant
that is almost next door has small town cafe prices with big city
quality -- the hash browns are to die for, I mean it. Evening dinner
finds the big log cabin dressed up in snowy white tablecloths with
candles, and our steaks, chops and ribs were perfectly prepared.
Every small town should have a big-thinking banker like the one who
opened a branch on the north end of town and then proceeded to support
two such extraordinary entrepreneurial efforts as The Red Rooster and
the Depot Inn!
If we were to find one teeny tiny quibble, it might be that the
extensive railroad memorabilia that is displayed throughout the
guestroom corridor and the rest of the hotel is not necessarily labeled,
and it frets me a bit that it isn't all behind glass... it is
museum-quality stuff and we literally took an hour or two just to browse
the walls of our hotel! Although it was really fun to come home to try
to research some of what we saw. SPOILER ALERT: The unusual yard drawing
displayed about halfway down the guest room hallway is of the P&LE
McKees Rocks yard in McKees Rocks, PA. Whew! *That* took a while to
track down, no pun intended!
We'll go back to LaPlata just to visit these two wonderful
establishments!
09/24/06 -- Kansas City,. MO
We are road warriors...staying at 100+ hotels per year and have done
this for 25+ years. We stayed in the finest (Ritz, Fairmont, Hyatt,
etc.) and many that were not so nice.
It's refreshing to find a a gem...in the middle of a corn field. It's
even better when the rooms are as nicely appointed as some of the finest
hotels in the world.
This would not be the right stop for someone wanting big shopping near
by. But, this tiny property has the feeling of the finest B&B's. How
often do you see crown molding in the bathroom...32" HDTV, full equipped
game room, nicely warm indoor pool, wireless and wired high speed
internet, and a magnificent (but small) meeting room that has all high
resolution A/V equipment installed. Plug in a laptop and you're ready.
The owners are accessible and interesting conversationalists. They have
themed the place to railroads. There are show cases down the hallway of
the guest rooms. Amazing place.
09/18/06 -- Missouri
The Depot Inn and Suites is a fantastic place to stay for a day or a
week--lots of entertainment for the kids (my sons love the water novelty
in the pool!) and it's so relaxing!! Dinner is literally next door and
the people are wonderful! We can't say enough about how great our
experience there was!
08/02/06 -- Pittsfield, IL
I recently finished my second stay at the new LaPlata Depot Inn & Suites
in LaPlata, Missouri, which is located close to Kirksville, Missouri
(home of A.T. Still University and Truman State University). This
railroad-themed facility offers luxurious and exceptionally clean
accommodations unlike any other in the region. Constructed from premium
materials and tastefully decorated with great attention detail, the
Depot Inn seems less like a hotel and more like a dream home. Rich
colors, comfortable furnishings, and beautiful floor coverings are
paired with granite countertops, railroad memorabilia, and luxurious
linens. In fact, the comfort of the bed and the high-count sheets is
unmatched by any other. The hotel also features a beautiful indoor
swimming pool, outdoor recreation, and a well-stocked general store. The
Depot Inn is within walking distance of the newly constructed Red
Rooster restaurant, which offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner--all
delicious. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful. I'm very much
looking forward to my next visit. The LaPlata Depot Inn & Suites
finishes first place in every category!

I stayed at the Depot Inn and Suites with my parents shortly after it
was opened. The first step into the hotel takes your breath away! I
would never have imaged such a beautiful place to be located in such a
small town. However, the location was very central to anything and
everything that we wanted to do in the area. People with small children
could stay at this hotel and never leave. The owners have thought of
everything!!! There is a large hottub and a wonderful indoor pool with a
large spout in the ceiling that releases water as the train whistle
blows. And there is even a treadmill there in the pool room so parents
can watch their children swim as they exercise. Although we didn't stay
in a luxury theme suite, the owners personally walked us through and
gave us a tour. Each room has different decor, while all of them have
plush king beds, leather couches, granite countertops and a large
flatscreen tv that is built in above the fireplace. I mean, this place
was build for corporate executives!!! BUT, they charge less than most
hotel chains that I have stayed in. Most of all, what makes the hotel
extra special is the authentic train memorabilia throughout the whole
hotel. Whether you are young, old or anywhere in between...you will
absolutely enjoy all that they have to offer.
